Coloring Spaces: Exploring the Psychology of Interior Design

By: Elisse Voysest

For my senior research project, I’m focusing on the connection between psychology and interior design, specifically how color impacts human behavior, emotion, and experience. My work looks at how design choices — especially color, texture, and layout — shape the way people feel, interact, and exist within a space.

By bringing together insights from color psychology and interior design, I’m highlighting how thoughtful design can go beyond aesthetics to actually support mental and emotional well-being.

The goal is to show how understanding human behavior can lead to spaces that don’t just look good — they feel good too.

The pamphlet outlines the concept, design direction, and brand identity behind hospitality space—highlighting how the vision comes to life through layout, material choices, and user experience.

Implementing Color Theory In a Community Center

This project explores how design—specifically through color theory—can support and uplift vulnerable youth in urban environments. As you move through this work, you’ll see how research, psychology, and design come together to propose a community center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Each section unpacks the theory behind color, its emotional impact, and how these ideas translate into intentional, therapeutic spaces. From concept development to spatial planning and color application, this project is about using design as a tool for healing, growth, and community connection.
