Design Challenge
The challenge was to design a distinctive hospitality space on the main level of an office building at National Harbor, Maryland one that feels rooted in the local community while introducing a clear brand identity. This included developing a name, concept, and design direction inspired by a relevant historic precedent.
Functionality and accessibility were key, with full ADA compliance and a focus on kitchen access. The goal was to strike a thoughtful balance between visual appeal and efficient use of the existing floor plate—creating a space that feels both welcoming and intentional.

Concept Statement
The goal was to transform part of the main level of an office building at the National Harbor into a warm, community-focused hospitality space—one that invites people in and makes them want to stay a while.
Inspired by Toma Café—one of Madrid’s first specialty coffee spots—the design introduces a laid-back, approachable coffee experience to the harbor. Rooted in the mantra “No Drama, Just Coffee,” the space offers affordable specialty coffee alongside natural wines, good beers, and brunch every day.
More than just a café, it’s a place to slow down, connect, and feel at ease. Every detail is designed to create a relaxed atmosphere that leaves guests with exactly what we hope for—a happy heart.
